My artwork stems from my values of creativity, love, and ever-developing awareness of my relationship to the world around me.
Each Mother’s Day, I plant flowers for my Mom with the help of the two little girls from next door. I wanted to to show these girls my appreciation for their enthusiasm and assistance. I decided to turn the flower tags that came with the plants into pinwheels as a “thank you” gift. As I placed the tags into a circle, I marveled at the intricate pattern and designs that began to take shape. Although the pinwheels didn’t last very long in our bitter Chicago cold- an idea had rooted itself within me. I began incorporating this new floral tag fascination with my already existing interest in the ancient art of mandala-making.
Mandalas are circular structures that organize around a unifying center. Placing the flower tags into mandalas allows me to contemplate patterns and relationships in my work but also within myself, others, and the world I am living in. Friends, family, and local greenhouses have all generously saved and given me their unneeded flower tags. This beautiful web of community connection, like the mandala, embraces the idea of unity and kinship.
I love the idea of taking this ancient and spiritual symbol and combining it with vivid colors and modern floral themes. My pieces are made on reclaimed wood, canvas, tabletops, largely with fluid acrylic paints and some spray paint. I hope you’ve enjoyed perusing my creations.
